Lavender Cultivation in Jammu ; Aroma Mission , CSIR-IIIM

 


To develop the aroma industry and give employment to pastoral communities in India, CSIR ( Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) started a well-known Aroma charge. The idea of this mission is to enhance the cultivation, production, and processing of various aromatic crops and flowers. Under this mission, CSIR-IIIM Jammu decided to grow aromatic crops on 500 acres of land. CSIR-IIM placed special provisions to provide technical and infrastructure services to the farmers and the producers of aromatic crops. It also provides various tools to extract aromatic oil and for the value addition of produce. CSIR-IIIM works to provide the farmers with proper prices for their produce and efforts are being made to support their business. CSIR-IIIM selected 10 aromatic plants Lemongrass, Rusagrass, Jammu Monarda, Mint, Geranium, Holy Basil(Tulsi), Lavender, Salvia, Rosemary, Wild Marigold with an objective to promote the cultivation of aromatic plants and also enhance the economic status of the farmer. All the crops selected by CSIR-IIIM are highly capable of enhancing the economic status of poor and marginal farmers. In all of them, one of the important and valuable aromatic crops is Lavender.





Lavender is a very unique aromatic plant. Essential oil is produced from the flowers of this crop. Lavender oil became an important product in the essential oil industry. Lavender cultivation is highly suitable in Jammu and Kashmir climate. The life of the Lavender plant is very long, it lives up to 12-15 years after planting. In Lavender, cultivation input is very low productivity is high, and also the demand is very much. IIIM Jammu encouraged the commercial farming of Lavender in the Kashmir valley on a large scale. After the success of Lavender farming in Kashmir, IIIM( Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine) Jammu started motivating people of the Jammu division for Lavender farming.

In the Jammu division, the first time Lavender cultivation was done in Bhaderwah village, Doda District, Jammu in 2010 by CSIR-IIIM Jammu. After various efforts of IIIM Jammu, Lavender farming became popular in Jammu. Many farmers shifted toward this opportunity and adopted this Lavender farming under the aroma mission. IIIM also worked to provide good varieties of this crop with a valuable price range.

Lavender is a highly tolerant and twelve-month crop, which grows better in a cold and mild hot climate. It can be grown on various varieties of soil including barren land. As it requires very little irrigation. Its life period is about 12-15 years. It can be easily grown in sloppy and hilly areas. lavender is cultivated along with the various main crops. It is also grown as an intercrop in orchards.
lavender flourishes once for 30- 40 days in mid-month of year June or July annually. Its flowers are used to produce lavender water, lavender oil, Dry flower, and various value-added products. That's why it is a very diverse crop for industries. 40-50 kg of oil can easily be obtained from 1 hectare of cultivated land. The price of lavender oil in the market is about 10,000 per liter. Lavender can provide up to 2.5 lacks to 3.5 lakh profit from 1 hectare of land yearly.
